Using sportsgrounds and ovals

You can hire our sportsgrounds for a range of different organised sports. To make a booking, visit the ACT Sport and Recreation website.

When they are not booked for formal sport, you can use sportsgrounds for informal exercise and recreation, including:

  • exercising with your dog
  • exercising by yourself or with friends
  • practicing sports, e.g soccer, golf.

We also have 31 dryland ovals which offer informal recreational opportunities.

Please make sure you know the rules. These can vary depending on activity and location. See below for more information about the activities you can do on our sportsgrounds and ovals.

Book a sportsground

Our sportsground facilities can accommodate a wide range of activities, from internationally recognised events to recreational or social bookings.

Individuals and sporting organisations can make a booking. Visit the ACT Sport and Recreation website to find out more about our sportsgrounds and to make a booking.

Exercise with your dog

You can exercise your dog on an oval when it is not being used for organised sport. This is outlined in the Domestic Animals Act 2000.

When there is formal sport on a sportsground, you are not allowed to have your dog on the playing surface.

If you are looking for an open space to exercise your dog, you can take advantage of the several dryland ovals in the ACT.

To find one near you please look at the map of dryland ovals (PDF 1.7 MB).

Please note: Dogs are prohibited on all synthetic playing fields and enclosed ovals.

For more information on where to exercise your dog see recreation with my dog.

Golf practice

Sportsgrounds can be used to practice golf. However, the following restrictions apply:

  • golf practice is not permitted when a sportsground is in use by groups or individuals
  • golf balls are not to be hit in the direction of property, such as buildings, parked cars, tractors engaged in mowing, pavilions or floodlight towers
  • it is an offence to deliberately endanger life or property and legal action will be taken against anyone caught doing so
  • tee-off is only permitted outside the marked playing surface and should be restricted to perimeter areas
  • all divots must be replaced as per golf course etiquette.

Please be careful of people and property if you do choose to use sportsgrounds for golf.

Permanent posts

There are several different types of goal posts available for use on ACT sportsgrounds throughout the year.

If you would like to practice your skills in the off-season, see below for a list of where posts can be found.

For more information on the location of these posts, please see the ACT Sport and Recreation website.

Dryland ovals

Dryland ovals are community resources for informal sports and recreation. They are a great place to exercise, take the dog for a walk, let the kids run around or just enjoy the great outdoors.

As they are not irrigated, they are a sustainable resource that helps save water.

Dryland ovals are mown around 6 times per year depending on the season. They are also periodically inspected to ensure the surface is in a safe condition.

Weather can affect the appearance of dryland ovals. Like other non-irrigated open space areas, they appear green after rain and will brown off when it’s dry.

Dryland ovals are not suitable for organised, formal sports. They do not have facilities such as pavilions, toilets, change rooms, canteen facilities and match play lighting. The ACT is fortunate to have access to 880 irrigated sportsgrounds which can be booked for formal sports.
