Protecting your property from flooding

Springs and runoff

Landowners are responsible for ensuring that their home and property are landscaped and designed to avoid property damage from springs and runoff. Please view the Stormwater: Protecting your house and property from springs and runoff pamphlet (PDF 423KB) (Word 28KB) for advice on how to ensure the safety of your property and neighbouring properties. It is important that you allow water to flow naturally from your neighbour’s property, and that it continues to flow to neighbouring properties without concentrating.

Please ensure that your gutters and down pipes are clear and without leaks. During a moderate rainfall event it is a good idea to check that your down pipes and gutters are functioning as they should.

Riverine flooding

Some houses in Canberra may be at risk of riverine flooding during or after a major storm event (a 1% EAP event, formerly known as a 1 in 100 year event). Riverine flooding happens when water overflows the banks of rivers and other waterway channels linked to river systems.

To see if your property is at risk of riverine flooding please see the riverine flood maps.
