Project description

Design is underway on Macquarie shops improvements.

Minor improvements are coming to the local shops at Macquarie Place, Macquarie to improve access and the overall look and feel, encouraging the community to shop local and spend more time in their suburbs.

As part of these improvements, local residents and visitors will benefit from additional landscaping and tree plantings enhancing the public spaces surrounding the shops and providing further shade. The design also includes new tables and seating as well as improved play opportunities for residents to gather and enjoy their local shopping environment. There will be access upgrades too with new accessible parking bays and upgraded lighting.

Key features

  • New seating and tables providing spaces to sit and gather
  • Improved playground with nature play and accessible play elements which may include an accessible nest swing, balancing logs and steppers
  • Additional trees and improved landscaping
  • Two new art murals to brighten up the area
  • New accessible parking bays
  • Safer pedestrian access in and around and carpark including upgraded paths, stairways and lighting.

Engagement

We have been liaising with business owners and tenants whose feedback informed the preliminary design. In June 2023 we released the preliminary design for the broader community to see what minor improvements are planned for the public spaces surrounding their local shops. We will continue to keep the local community and business owners/tenants updated as we move towards and start construction.

Why has the preliminary design not been released for community input?

This project is providing minor safety, access and look and feel improvements for the public spaces. Based on the available budget, the scope of works is limited. We have prioritised what can be delivered and are working closely with the business owners and tenants to reflect their feedback in the designs.

Next steps

The next step for this project will be to work through the detailed design phase. This includes refining the preliminary design, undertaking any necessary approvals and pre-ordering materials for the construction phase. Construction is expected to begin early in the second half of 2024, with timeframes to be confirmed during detailed design.
