Board functions
In Australia, the veterinary profession (vets) is governed by a Veterinary Board or Council. They protect the health and wellbeing of animals and the public.
In Canberra, the ACT Veterinary Practitioners Board (the Board) is governed by the Veterinary Practice Act 2018 (the Act).
The Board provides relevant, accurate and up-to-date advice. It helps the public and vets on matters relevant to the profession.
The Board has 7 members appointed by the Minister for City Services including:
- the president
- 4 registered vets
- 2 non-vet members, including a community spokesperson.
The Board oversees the Act and registers suitable qualified vets and specialists, allowing them to practice in the ACT. The Board is also in charge of:
- considering complaints against registered vets or specialists
- monitoring the conduct of the profession in the ACT.
The Board can take disciplinary action against vets who may be in breach of the Act.
