Project description

Construction is starting soon on Yerrabi Pond District Park upgrades.

Yerrabi Pond in Canberra’s north is a popular recreation spot for people to exercise, take their dog, sit and relax, play, skate and enjoy social events. In 2021 the community provided feedback on improvements they would like to see. We heard the community would like more rubbish bins, more public toilets, improved signage, recreational facilities for young people and path improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.

For more information on the consultation that took place in 2021, including a What We Heard Report (PDF) summarising the feedback, visit YourSay.

Other works in the area

In addition to the above works, repairs will also be undertaken to the three pedestrian bridges across Yerrabi Pond. Design work is currently underway with construction anticipated to commence in mid-2024. Further information around construction timeframes and potential impacts to pedestrian and cyclist routes will be provided ahead of works commencing.

Completed works

Initial improvements delivered in 2021-22 included eight new seats, new plantings, 22 new 'shared path' signs and additional line marking at key locations, drainage works along the path network, solar lighting, new softfall for the flying fox, a new half climbing wall and new bin shrouds. A new nature play space was also delivered in 2020 with an aquatic theme which features a central climbable turtle paying homage to the species living in our local waterways.

In addition, the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate (EPSDD) delivered a floating wetland at Yerrabi Pond in 2023. The floating wetland helps improve water quality and minimise harmful algae. You can find out more about this project on the EPSDD website.

Construction

New lighting

Preparatory work will begin on site from Monday 15 April 2024. There will be discrete fencing installed to keep the public out of the work area. We remind everyone this is electrical infrastructure and so for your own safety and that of others, please do not enter the work area nor remove the fencing.

These works will take around 3 months to complete with the lights expected to be operational around the middle of the year.

Amenities

Construction procurement is underway for the new amenities (toilets and picnic areas). We anticipate works beginning on site in the coming months.
