Project description

Complete: Brierly Street improvements.

A second stage of improvements to Brierly Street adjacent to Cooleman Court in Weston were completed in April 2024. Brierly Street is a flourishing café and restaurant strip and these improvements will provide more inviting spaces for the community and businesses to enjoy.

Extensive engagement was undertaken with both community and stakeholders with feedback invited on improvements people would like to see to Brierly Street and the surrounding areas. Main themes heard during the engagement phases included more trees and landscaping, improved pedestrian safety and better amenities including lighting. For more information on the consultation that took place, including a What We Heard Report (PDF) summarising the feedback, visit YourSay.

Key features delivered

Trees and landscaping

  • More greenery has been added including more deciduous street trees along Brierly Street and garden beds. This includes 24 trees, 293 shrubs, 890 strappy plants, 174 herbs, six climbers and 384 groundcovers.

Pedestrian safety/access

  • Better pedestrian connectivity between the various commercial centres with two new raised crossings on either side of the existing raised crossing (one close to Mahony Court and the other towards Parkinson Street).
  • A slower traffic environment through the widening of the verges in sections of Brierly Street which in turn has reduced the width of the road.
  • Removal of the existing bus layover and conversion into 30 minute parking.
  • Increased and improved lighting.

Amenity

  • More comfortable and inviting spaces for the community to stop and stay.
  • Improvements to the existing furniture in Trenerry Square.
  • More bicycle parking and rubbish bins.
  • More spaces for alfresco dining for restaurants to consider expanding into.

Changes to parking arrangements

Following engagement with the community, the following changes to existing parking arrangements were implemented.

  • The carparks off Parkinson Street and Mahony Court amended for consistency to 2-hour parking Monday to Sunday.
  • Implement 2-hour parking restrictions on Watling Place.
  • Convert Commons Court and Macleod Court all-day parking to 2-hour parking restrictions.
