General updates
Death cap mushrooms: Remember it is not safe to pick and eat wild mushrooms in the ACT. Our maintenance team work year-round to reduce the amount of death cap mushrooms in public spaces, removing 49 death cap mushrooms in the week ending Friday 23 May 2025. If you think you have seen a death cap mushroom in a public area you can report it to Access Canberra by phone on 13 22 81 or through Fix My Street.
Free public transport on Reconciliation Day: Transport Canberra bus and light rail services are free on Monday 2 June 2025. Catch public transport to the Reconciliation Day event at Commonwealth Park or Matildas v Argentina match at GIO stadium. Please note a Sunday timetable is in place on public holidays.
Household bin collections: Remember to put your bins out by 7 am. The ACT has a new service provider and your bins might be collected earlier or later in the day.
Illegal dumping: Compliance operations are continuing around Canberra, with surveillance cameras being deployed in areas where illegal dumping is occurring. Fines range from $500 to $1,500 for an individual and up to $7,500 for a corporation.
Libraries: Lift replacement works are underway at Belconnen, Tuggeranong and Woden libraries.
Road closures: Lane closures continue on Commonwealth Avenue bridge, weather permitting. For more information see the NCA website. For information about road closures in the City see the light rail and London Circuit construction map.
ACT parks and reserves: Crews are undertaking serrated tussock control at Bruce Ridge and sagittaria control at CIT Bruce.
Horticultural maintenance: Maintenance is underway at underpasses in Florey, Page and Scullin. Crews are also undertaking leaf collection in Higgins, Holt and Latham as well as John Knight Memorial Park and Margaret Timpson Park.
Playgrounds: The shade sail at the playground on Macdermott Place in Belconnen is being repaired.
Roads and paths: Crews are undertaking:

street sweeping in car parks at the shops in Cook, Hawker, Jamison, Kaleen and Macquarie.
Trees: Crews are undertaking pruning and tree removals in Dunlop, Kaleen and Giralang. They are also providing young tree care in Florey and Latham.
Weeds: Crews are managing weeds along the Barton Highway as well as at bollards and mowing obstacles in Giralang, Kaleen and Melba.
Infrastructure
There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Belconnen region including:
Evatt shops improvements: Artist Happy Decay will continue work on the mural on the IGA wall at Evatt shops this week. Please take care and obey signage when using the path where the artist is working.
Ibbott Lane raised pedestrian crossing: Work continues on a new raised pedestrian crossing on Ibbott Lane between Lathlain Street and Market Street in Belconnen. This project aims to improve safety for pedestrians, particularly those visiting the Capital Food Market and the nearby shops.
Macquarie shops improvements: Artist John Voir will continue work on the first of 2 murals he is installing at Macquarie shops. Please take care and obey signage when using the path where the artist is working.
Palmerville Heritage Park loop path: Works are expected to commence mid-June and are expected to take approximately 4 months (weather permitting). The existing path will remain open to the public and signage will be installed on site next week to inform the community of the work.
Crews are undertaking serrated tussock control at O’Connor Ridge and Lyneham Ridge as well as treating moth vine in Mount Ainslie.
Sections of the Cascades Track, in Googong Foreshore are closed for trail upgrades. Completion of these works is anticipated by Friday 6 June 2025.

Prescribed burns: Subject to suitable weather conditions, ACT Parks and Conservation is conducting the following prescribed burns over the next couple of months as part of the annual program: Black Mountain, O’Connor Ridge, Kowen (Bulldozer Road), Kowen (Oaks Estate), Mount Pleasant and Pialligo. The community may see an increase in smoke and emergency service vehicles in these areas but is asked not to call emergency triple-zero (000) unless they see an unattended fire.
Rabbit control: Rabbit control work is underway at the Red Hill Nature Reserve until Thursday 31 July 2025. Signage is in place to advise reserve users of activity and restrictions. Night rabbit control work is also underway this week at City Hill and Grevillea Park.

Infrastructure
There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Central Canberra region including:
Path network improvements: Construction is underway on the path connection at Wentworth Avenue near Mildura Street and Leichhardt Street.
School safety program: Construction is underway on the new children’s crossings and concrete footpath at Canberra Girls Grammar School and will be completed by the end of June 2025.
Monaro highway pavement rehabilitation: Additional inspections are underway on the southbound carriageway to determine if existing pavement can be overlaid.
ACT parks and reserves: Landscaping works are continuing at Budjan Galindji Grasslands Nature Reserve. Crews are also undertaking vegetation management works to improve access along management trails at Little Mulligans in Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve. Active surveillance, monitoring and controlling has commenced at Mitchell near Nadjung Mada Nature Reserve for serrated tussock.
Horticultural maintenance: Crews are undertaking maintenance at bus stops in Amaroo and underpasses in Casey, Moncrieff and Ngunnawal.
Playgrounds: The shade sail at the playground on Sutherland Crescent in Taylor is being repaired.
Prescribed burns: Subject to suitable weather conditions, ACT Parks and Conservation is conducting prescribed burns in Gungahlin and Gubur Dhaura over the next couple of months as part of the annual program. The community may see an increase in smoke and emergency service vehicles in these areas but is asked not to call emergency triple-zero (000) unless they see an unattended fire.

Playground improvements: The playground located on Tea Gardens in Gungahlin is partially closed while rubber softfall is replaced. It is expected to reopen by the end of the week.
The annual 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) baiting program is underway until Tuesday 10 June 2025. It targets wild dogs, foxes and feral pigs in various areas of Namadgi National Park, Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and the Murrumbidgee River Corridor. All areas will be clearly indicated with warning signs.
A section of Paddys River Road, near the Deep Space Tracking Station, has one lane closed for construction upgrades. Please follow any traffic arrangements in place. Completion of these works is anticipated in early June 2025.
The Woods Reserve and Campground is closed until further notice for emergency maintenance.

Prescribed burns: Subject to suitable weather conditions, ACT Parks and Conservation is conducting the following prescribed burns over the next couple of months as part of the annual program: McQuoids Hill Nature Reserve, Urambi Hills, Jerrabomberra Grasslands Reserve (east and west), Jerrabomberra Wetland Reserve and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. The community may see an increase in smoke and emergency service vehicles in these areas but is asked not to call emergency triple-zero (000) unless they see an unattended fire.

Skateparks: A small section at the eastern end of the Tuggeranong skatepark will be closed on Tuesday 3 June and Wednesday 4 June 2025 for surface remediation.
Trees: Crews are undertaking pruning and tree removals in Kambah and Gordon.
Weeds: Crews are managing weeds along Drakeford Drive and at bollards, mowing obstacles and mulch beds in Kambah and Wanniassa.
Infrastructure
There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Tuggeranong region including:
Lanyon Marketplace improvements: Work is progressing on the 2 murals at the Box Hill Avenue underpass. Please take care and obey signage when using the shared path at the underpass.
Playground improvements: Some areas remain fenced off at Point Hut District Park while work is underway.
ACT parks and reserves: Murrays Corner recreation area and Bullen Pines are closed to undertake forestry operations until further notice. Ecologists are monitoring populations of endangered Murrumbidgee Bossiaea (Bossiaea grayi) in the Molonglo River corridors. They are also conducting rapid assessments of riparian areas on rural leases and reserves across the western boundary of the Molonglo Valley and Weston Creek.
Horticultural maintenance: Crews are undertaking maintenance at Chapman, Phillip, Weston and Woden.
Prescribed burns: Subject to suitable weather conditions, ACT Parks and Conservation is conducting prescribed burns in Denman Prospect, Mount Taylor and Molonglo over the next couple of months as part of the annual program. The community may see an increase in smoke and emergency service vehicles in these areas but is asked not to call emergency triple-zero (000) unless they see an unattended fire.
Mawson shops toilet upgrade: The new male toilet is almost complete and will open soon to the public. The temporary container toilet will then be removed. Construction continues on the car park, with the safety bollards remaining in place while accessibility improvements are made.
Arterial roads are litter picked approximately every 4 weeks. Main roads are also regularly inspected within this period to identify and program the removal of larger litter items.
Barbecues are cleaned twice a week between September and April and once a week for the rest of the year. We manage 125 barbecues across Canberra.
Graffiti is removed within 5 business days of being reported and within one business day if offensive. To report graffiti please go to Fix My Street.
Lakes and waterways adjacent to town and district parks are checked for litter each week. Urban lakes and ponds are litter picked a minimum of 5-6 times a year. There are over 160 urban lakes and ponds around Canberra. Reports of excess litter or illegal dumping are prioritised for removal as soon as possible.
Playgrounds are routinely inspected. We manage over 500 playgrounds across Canberra including:
district playgrounds (e.g. Lake Ginninderra) which are inspected twice per week
central community playgrounds (e.g. Crace) which are inspected every week
local neighbourhood playgrounds (e.g. Duffy) which are inspected every fortnight.
Public land around shopping centres is routinely cleaned. We manage 90 shopping centres across Canberra and clean them as follows:
town centres (e.g. Woden) and group centres (e.g. Dickson) are cleaned daily
local shops (e.g. Fisher) vary in cleaning from daily to 3 times a week.
Public toilets are cleaned at least once daily. Additionally, reactive cleaning and maintenance is undertaken as required. We manage over 70 toilets across Canberra.
Trees under 3 years of age in non‑irrigated areas are generally watered monthly from November to April.
