Project description

Construction is underway on Tuggeranong foreshore improvements.

The revitalisation of the Tuggeranong Town Centre is continuing with the next stage of improvements to be delivered along the Lake Tuggeranong foreshore precinct. The ACT Government is investing $4.75 million to design and construct improvements across the foreshore. This will create a more liveable, people focused and active public realm.

In 2022 we invited feedback on upgrades to the foreshore precinct. We received 657 items of feedback and summarised the key themes and insights via the What We Heard Report. For more information on the consultation that took place visit YourSay.

The priorities for the Tuggeranong foreshore improvements are to:

  • improve access to public recreation amenity along the Lake Tuggeranong foreshore
  • improve active travel connectivity to the Town Centre
  • provide better green spaces
  • provide more recreational activities along the foreshore in a renewed playground that is appropriate to the status of a Town Park.

Construction

Construction activities started on site in September 2023. The site compound is located in Tuggeranong Town Park near the playground. There are seven discrete work areas along the foreshore to allow as much area as possible to remain open and accessible to the public whilst construction is underway.

The below provides an overview of what has been completed on site and what you can expect to see in the coming months.

  • Tuggeranong Town Park Playground: the majority of works are done with the remaining works expected to be completed in May 2024. Following final inspections, the playground will reopen to the public.
  • Boardwalk: the existing decking has been stripped and demolition works completed. Steel fabrication for the deck and the new pergola has been completed with installation to begin. Furniture has been replaced further along the lakefront and moved to create more space for pedestrians and cyclists. The boardwalk has temporarily closed whilst installation takes place. Signed detours are in place to assist the community move through the area whilst the boardwalk is closed.
  • College Walk: the area has been closed to pedestrians and cyclists with a formal detour now in place. Asphalt and concrete pads for bins and seats is being laid; a recycled material permeable surface has been used on the cycle path for the first time in Canberra to help reduce the work's carbon footprint and provide improved growing conditions for adjacent trees. Lighting and drainage works are completed and cycle path line marking underway. Garden beds are prepared and mulched in readiness for new trees to be planted in this area.
  • Toilet blocks: The new exeloo is installed and services connected. It will be open for public use while the remaining old toilet is being upgraded.
  • Bartlet Place crossing: work has started to upgrade the existing crossing to improve pedestrian and cyclist access and safety; the existing speed hump will be demolished as part of the work and replaced by a new asphalt speed hump. New streetlight works are underway and the existing line marking updated.
  • Reed Street: works have started with demolition to improve lines of sight and create more space for pedestrians and cyclists. Pavement base preparation is underway to enable safer access. New furniture will also be installed.

All works are expected to be completed in mid-2024.
