Bulky waste collection for multi-unit developments

This page is only for building management. Strata managers and managing agents must request bulky waste collections for multi-unit developments they manage.

Bulky waste sorted

If you live in an apartment or townhouse with shared waste, your building management must make a bulky waste collection booking on your behalf. If you have your own kerbside wheelie bins you can book a bulky waste collection.

Steps for booking bulky waste collection at a building you manage

  1. Check the next available bulky waste collection date for the complex you manage. To do this, access the multi-unit developments(MUDs) bulky waste booking form, enter the suburb, section and block details for the property. Each complex has one scheduled collection date available for each quarter during the financial year.
  2. Residents must complete a Resident Application Form to enable you to lodge a booking on their behalf.
  3. Once you have collected participating Resident Application Forms, submit the MUDs bulky waste booking form. After the booking form is lodged, you may be contacted to discuss a collection location at the building.
  4. Communicate with residents in your complex ahead of the bulky waste collection date.

Frequently asked questions for building management

How do residents in apartments or townhouses with shared waste facilities arrange a bulky waste collection?

Residents must contact their strata manager or managing agent to enquire about the next available date for their complex. If nothing is scheduled, building management will need to arrange a bulky waste collection for the complex.

How do residents apply for bulky waste collection?

Ask residents to complete a resident application form and provide them with suggested collection dates. Provide them with a due date to return the form to be able to participate in bulky waste collection.

This form gives you information on the number of units participating in the collection and those disposing mattresses or ensemble bases so you can recoup the costs for this.

The number of participating units helps the contractor calculate the collection size.

The form tells residents what items are acceptable and unacceptable. This should minimise contamination.

How does the collection process work?

Two trucks are used for bulky waste collections:

  • one for e-waste, metals, white goods and recyclable furniture
  • the other for items destined for landfill.

Both trucks will arrive on the same date, but they may arrive at different times.

Items which do not meet the eligibility criteria remain the responsibility of building management. Please note that an illegal dumping fine may be issued if items are outside the property boundary.

How do I choose a bulky waste collection date?

Access the Waste Services Management System (WSMS) via the City Services website.

Enter the suburb, section and block details for the property to see the list of the next available collection dates.

The booking must be made at least 14 days before the collection date.

There is one scheduled collection date available for each quarter. The routes are updated two quarters in advance, so every address should always have two collection dates available for booking.

Are there mattress and ensemble base disposal fees?

Yes, mattresses and ensembles are subject to additional fees.  After submitting the form, if your booking includes mattresses and ensemble bases, an invoice will be sent to the Strata Manager from ACT NoWaste. This must be paid before the service takes place.

Strata must manage the costs for any mattresses or bed bases with directly from residents. The resident application form will inform residents of disposal costs.

How can strata managers nominate a collection point?

Strata managers can nominate a collection point within the complex, keeping in mind that it needs to be accessible for trucks to collect the goods (parking lots, kerbside). The contractor will only contact strata managers if the collection point listed on the booking form is not suitable.

  • Basement or underground carparks are not suitable collection points.
  • Items need to be placed within the property boundary by 7am on the morning of the collection date.
  • Residents can place items out up to 48 hours before the scheduled collection time. Before this time, they must remain with the residents.
  • Items should not be stored in public areas prior to the collection service unless the complex permits this and has space to store items safely.

How can I track the bulky waste collection request?

After submitting the booking form, you will receive a reference number by email and further details if your order includes mattresses or ensembles. Changes can be made up to 5 business days before the scheduled collection.

How can I communicate with residents about the collection date?

Once the booking is confirmed and payment has been made (if applicable), you can advise your residents of the collection date using this poster.
