The weather this week is looking mostly sunny and dry. Our planned maintenance and infrastructure work for the week is outlined below. It is subject to weather and any required operational changes.

Key updates in your region

Belconnen

Mowing program

Crews will be mowing in the following suburbs:

  • Evatt, Florey, Fraser, McKellar, Melba, Page, Scullin and Spence.

Weed spraying program

Weed spraying will take place in the following areas:

  • Arterial and collector roads: Belconnen, Holt and Gungahlin Drive Extension.
  • Shrub beds, urban open space and mowing obstacles: Dunlop, Evatt, Giralang and new Macgregor.

Rabbit control

  • Rabbit control has now moved into a maintenance phase. Monitoring of all previous control sites continues, with control operations occurring fortnightly where required.

Tree programs

  • Watering and maintenance of young trees is ongoing across Canberra.

Storm clean-up

  • The remaining storm clean-up work is continuing across all affected suburbs, with a focus on completing fallen branch requests.

Shopping trolley compliance blitz

  • Fifty-one abandoned shopping trolleys were recently collected outside shopping centre precincts in Belconnen as part of an ACT Government blitz. Retail owners of the impounded trolleys were informed and reminded of their obligations to responsibly manage trolleys. Impounded trolleys were all collected by the retailers from City Rangers over the last week.

Current infrastructure activities

There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Belconnen region. Below are the key updates for this week:

  • Belconnen skatepark vertical ramp: Construction is well underway on-site for the new half-pipe with the concrete poured for the ramp’s footings. Fabrication of the half-pipe is continuing off-site. The skatepark will remain open during these works with the community asked to please take care around the construction site.
  • Kippax Group Centre (Hardwick Crescent) upgrades: Work is underway on-site. The first stage of works are in the northern section near the service station. There will be a road closure in place. Construction is expected to take approximately 9 months to complete (weather permitting).
  • Gundaroo Drive duplication: There are reduced speed limits in place for the safety of road users and our workers. Detours are also in place for users of the off-road community path network.
  • Molonglo River Bridge: Significant earthworks are continuing for the realignment of the northern approach road to Coppins Crossing, expected to open to traffic in the coming months. Temporary traffic lights are in operation to manage traffic crossing Coppins Crossing. Reduced speed limits are in place for the safety of road users and our workers. Access to the Namarag and Butters Bridge is now via Thancoupie Crescent in Whitlam. There is no safe access from Denman Prospect.

Central Canberra

Major road resurfacing works

The following roads will be resurfaced:

  • Acton: Clunies Ross Street, from Julius Road to Lady Denman Drive.
  • Campbell: National Capital Authority roadworks. On Monday 29 April Constitution Avenue will be closed in both directions between Blamey Crescent and Reg Sanders Way from 7pm until 6am.
  • Dickson: Woolley Street, from Cape Street to Badham Street.

Mowing program

  • The seasonal mowing program for suburbs and areas of open space is now complete. Suburbs will be inspected weekly and mowed as required.
  • The following major roads will be mowed: Federal Highway, Majura Parkway.

Weed spraying program

Weed spraying will take place in the following areas:

  • Arterial and collector roads: Ainslie, Hindmarsh Drive, Lyneham and North Lyneham.
  • Shrub beds, open space and mowing obstacles: Ainslie, Griffith, Lyneham, North Lyneham and Red Hill.

Tree programs

  • Watering and maintenance of young trees is ongoing across Canberra.
  • Crews will be continuing autumn planting in Barton and Griffith.

Storm clean-up

  • The remaining storm clean-up work is continuing across all affected suburbs, with a focus on completing fallen branch requests.

Street sweeping

  • Street sweeping will take place weekly during the autumn period in Ainslie, Barton, Braddon, Campbell, Deakin, Dickson, Downer, Forrest, Griffith, Hackett, Kingston, Lyneham, Manuka, Narrabundah, O'Connor, Red Hill, Reid, Turner, Watson and Yarralumla.
  • Priority will be given to streets with the heaviest leaf fall.

Rabbit control

  • Rabbit control has now moved into a maintenance phase. Monitoring of all previous control sites continues, with control operations occurring fortnightly where required.

European wasps

  • The wasp season is starting to slow down with the cooler weather. We have received a total of 149 enquiries relating to European wasps.
  • While Pialligo is a known hotspot, there has been an increase in reports this year. We are continuing to inspect accessible areas near the Molonglo River for wasp nests we can eradicate and are considering baiting options if the problem persists.

Current infrastructure activities

There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the central region. Below are the key updates for this week:

  • Bowen Drive quick-build protected cycle lane: Work has started on site to deliver a new pop-up protected cycle lane along Bowen Drive between the Kings Avenue Bridge and the Bowen Park carpark. The cycle lane is being built in the inside lane of Bowen Drive, which will no longer be trafficable.
  • Goliath Court stormwater upgrades: Work is underway to deliver stormwater upgrades in and around Goliath Court in O’Connor. Pedestrian, shopfront and residential property access will be maintained at all times. For safety reasons, there will be detours in place for pedestrians around the various worksites and temporary road closures may be in place.

Gungahlin

Mowing program

Crews will be mowing in the following suburbs:

  • Amaroo, Franklin, Gungahlin and Mitchell.

Weed spraying program

Weed spraying will take place in the following areas:

  • Arterial and collector roads: Amaroo, Crace, Ngunnawal and Palmerston.
  • Laneways: Casey, Crace, Mitchell, Nicholls and Palmerston.
  • Shrub beds, open space and mowing obstacles: Crace.

Rabbit control

  • Rabbit control has now moved into a maintenance phase. Monitoring of all previous control sites continues, with control operations occurring fortnightly where required.

Repair work

  • Work will commence to repair the concrete etching at the Crace Coral Sea memorial.

Tree programs

  • Watering and maintenance of young trees is ongoing across Canberra.
  • Planting will be undertaken in Casey, Gungahlin, Nicholls and Throsby.

Storm clean-up

  • The remaining storm clean-up work is continuing across all affected suburbs, with a focus on completing fallen branch requests.

  • Twenty-three abandoned shopping trolleys were recently collected outside shopping centre precincts in Gungahlin as part of an ACT Government blitz.   • Gundaroo Drive duplication: There are reduced speed limits in place for the safety of road users and our workers. Detours are also in place for users of the off-road community path network.
  • Franklin dog park: Construction is underway to deliver a new fenced dog park in the open space bound by Nullarbor Avenue and Oodgeroo Avenue. Construction is expected to take approximately 9 months and be complete in the summer of 2024-25 (weather permitting).
  • Yerrabi Pond District Park upgrades: Work has started to deliver new LED lighting along Mirrabei Drive and down towards Bizant Street and at the skatepark. Discrete fencing is in place for the safety of the community.

Tuggeranong

Major road resurfacing works

The following roads will be resurfaced:

  • Banks: Pockett Avenue, from Wilson Crescent to Tharwa Drive.

Mowing program

  • Crews will be mowing in Greenway.

Weed spraying program

Weed spraying will take place in the following areas:

  • Arterial and collector roads: Banks, Conder and Gordon.
  • Laneways: Gowrie, Kambah and Richardson.
  • Shops: Gowrie.
  • Shrub beds, open space and mowing obstacles: Gowrie, Kambah and Richardson.

Tree programs

  • Watering and maintenance of young trees is ongoing across Canberra.

Storm clean-up

  • The remaining storm clean-up work is continuing across all affected suburbs, with a focus on completing fallen branch requests.

Playground maintenance

  • Timber repairs, asphalt surface repairs and soft fall mulch top ups are ongoing at the playground on Attiwell Circuit in Kambah.

Graffiti removal

  • The new toilet block at Tuggeranong town park has been significantly vandalised with graffiti within 2 days of opening. The teams have cleaned the site and will continue to closely monitor it.

Current infrastructure activities

There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Tuggeranong region. Below are the key updates for this week:

  • Sulwood Drive improvements: Sulwood Drive will be closed to all traffic between Inkster Street and Livingston Avenue from Monday 6 May 2024 for approximately 13 weeks (weather permitting). This is for the first stage of the upgrades including the road pavement rehabilitation, installation of traffic lights at Mannheim Street and access improvements for the Mount Taylor carpark.
  • Tuggeranong foreshore improvements: The new fabricated toilet has been installed at the Tuggeranong town park. The toilet is open to the public while the adjacent existing toilet is closed and upgraded. As part of the safety upgrades along Bartlet Place, the carpark is temporarily closed to the public. This is expected to reopen in early May.
  • Monaro Highway upgrades: Construction activities for the Lanyon Drive interchange are continuing. There are reduced speed limits in place. While these initial works are not expected to have impacts on travel times, we anticipate delays to travel times when the major construction works begin in the coming months with lane closures expected. Further information will be provided ahead of major works commencing.
  • Minor improvements at playgrounds: This week minor improvements will take place at the Charleston Street playground in Monash and at Fadden Pines. Work will include the topping up of softfall mulch.

Woden, Weston Creek and Molonglo

Major road resurfacing works

The following roads will be resurfaced:

  • Chapman: Darwinia Terrace, from Hindmarsh Drive to near Perry Drive.
  • Waramanga: Badimara Street, from Nemarang Crescent (north) to near Kalgoorlie Crescent.

Mowing program

Crews will be mowing in the following suburbs:

  • Chapman, Chifley, Fisher, Pearce, Phillip, Rivett, Stirling and Waramanga.

Weed spraying program

Weed spraying will take place in the following areas:

  • Laneways: Duffy and Holder.
  • Shopping centres: Phillip.
  • Shrub beds, open space and mowing obstacles: Duffy, Pearce, Rivett, Waramanga and Weston.

Tree programs

  • Watering and maintenance of young trees is ongoing across Canberra.
  • Planting will be undertaken in Curtin, Isaacs, Lyons, Phillip and Stirling.

Storm clean-up

  • The remaining storm clean-up work is continuing across all affected suburbs, with a focus on completing fallen branch requests.

Street sweeping

  • Street sweeping will take place weekly during the autumn period in Garran and Hughes.
  • Priority will be given to streets with the heaviest leaf fall.
